The history of School of Foreign Studies can be traced back to 1961 when the Foreign Languages Department was founded under Wenzhou Normal College. It started to enroll students (associate degree in English) in 1979, undergraduate students in English in 1996, undergraduate students in Translation in 2016. In terms of advanced study, it started to recruit postgraduates in English language and literature in 2007, and subject teaching (English) in 2015. Currently, we offer three undergraduate programs in English (teacher training), translation and Japanese, as well as two postgraduate programs in Translation and Interpreting (MTI) and subject teaching (English).

As a provincial first-class undergraduate program, the program of English (teacher training), under the principle of “student-centered, output-oriented, and continuous improvement”, adopts the SMART training model to improve students’ overall teaching ability, international vision, multilingual skills, and cross-cultural communication ability. The program of translation continues to expand exchanges and cooperation with local government agencies, enterprises and institutions, and actively undertakes the work of English translation of local mainstream media, government websites, as well as the overseas promotion of Wenzhou. The program of Japanese fully considers the national and local needs and works with the industry and enterprises to actively cultivate compound professional talents with the international perspective. The two postgraduate programs, namely, subject teaching (English) and MTI feature strong strength in research. Our faculties published several papers in renowned journals and undertook several projects subsidized by National Social Science Fund and provincial and ministerial-level research projects.

We have 98 faculty members, including 88 full-time teachers. There are 27 associate professors (and above), 7 foreign teachers, 30 with doctoral degrees, and 3 PhD candidates. 5 have been selected into Wenzhou 551 Talent Program and 8 have been appointed as Oujiang Distinguished Professor of Wenzhou University.

We are continuously promoting the in-depth integration of information technology and education and teaching, and deepening the reform of teaching and research & innovation and entrepreneurship education. Our teachers won the second and third prizes of the Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievement Award, the first prize of the Provincial Higher Education Outstanding Achievement Award, the grand prize and the first prize of the Provincial University Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition, the first prize of the Provincial University Young Teachers Teaching Competition, the grand prize of the Zhejiang Division of the National Foreign Language Teaching Competition, the second prize of the national competition, and the grand prize in First Teaching Competition of WZU.

We cultivate students who could adapt to the general trend of national development and meet the local needs by consolidating their professional knowledge, teaching skills and translation skills. Over the years, our one-time pass rate of CET-4 and CET-8 is more than 40 percentage points higher than the national average. The number and ranking of winners in the teaching skill competition ranks among the top in the provincial universities.

The statistics over the past three years show that many of our graduates work with what they had learned in the university. In particular, the program of English (teacher training) was rated the most competitive program for career development in Wenzhou University in 2020. An increasing number of graduates are admitted to domestic first-class universities and overseas universities.
