A Study on the Promotion of Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties by Professor Weimin Yu from Wenzhou University won the first prize of the 21st Zhejiang Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Award in 2021 (in the fundamental theoretical research category).

This book is an outstanding achievement of the key academic development project in Zhejiang Province. This book is 550,000 words long and contains three parts: part 1: study on the promotion of the text of Southern Opera; part 2: study on the promotion of Southern Opera stage; part 3: study on the promotion of Southern Opera in modern local opera development.

This book makes further upgrades and improvement in three aspects on top of existing studies: firstly, it not only summarizes the variation of Southern Opera texts in the scripting format, tune, and rhyme during the promotional process, but also explores the causes and patterns of such variation. Secondly, in focusing the study of Southern Opera promotion, this book also emphasizes the study on the promotion of Southern Opera stage and summarizes the interaction between the promotion of Southern Opera stage and Southern Opera texts, which offsets the tendency to lean towards the study of text promotion as opposed to the study of opera stage. Thirdly, it emphasizes the study on promotion of Southern Opera in modern times, and summarizes the promotional channels and forms of Southern Opera during this period. It not only sums up the impact of Southern Opera on the formation and development of local operas but also summarizes the changes and variations of Southern Opera during the promotion of local operas.

This research achievement has generated positive social impact. Firstly, it summarizes the rules for the promotion of Southern Opera, which provides experience and reference for the study of Chinese operas; secondly, through studying the promotion of Southern Opera in local operas, it identifies the rules and patterns of its evolution and development, which provides experience reference for the continual improvement and sustainable development of classic Southern Opera works and thus encourages the development and prosperity of 

Introduction to the author

Weimin Yu, born in Yuhang, Zhejiang Province, is a distinguished professor of Wenzhou University. He was once a professor and worked as a doctoral supervisor at Nanjing University. Winner of “National Labor Medal”, a model worker of Zhejiang Province, standing Vice President of Ancient Chinese Opera Society, and charge person of “Zhejiang Traditional Opera Research and Inheritance Center” at the Key Philosophy and Social Science Research Base in Zhejiang Province, he is mainly engaged in the study of the history of ancient Chinese operas.
